Kudzu is a brand I created in my Studio 2 class, where we were given the freedom to turn any product into a brand without boundaries. The Kudzu Candle Collection is inspired by the ethereal and haunting essence of singer Ethel Cain. With each candle representing a distinct emotional and atmospheric layer of Cain’s music, the collection seeks to embody themes of nostalgia, longing, and the human experience—much like Cain’s lyrics and soundscapes.
The collection’s name, Kudzu, is derived from the invasive yet beautiful vine that overtakes landscapes, symbolizing the overwhelming emotional grip that Cain’s music can have on a listener.
The design concept for the Kudzu Candle Collection is heavily influenced by Ethel Cain’s melancholic and evocative style. The candles are designed to evoke a sense of vulnerability and introspection, much like Cain’s music, which weaves together themes of loss, love, and self-discovery. The use of soft, earthy tones and organic textures mirrors the intricate, raw beauty found in her lyrics. The design draws inspiration from nature’s enduring and often overpowering presence, just as Cain’s work leaves a lasting impression on those who listen.
The collection’s visual approach is centered around a blend of historical and contemporary influences. Photography and illustrations inspired by Southern Gothic and vintage Americana infuse the designs with a sense of nostalgia, capturing the fragility and resilience of the human spirit. The Kudzu collection is presented through minimalistic yet evocative imagery, where faded photographs and soft-focus visuals reflect the hazy beauty of Cain’s world.
The candles are crafted with a mix of natural soy wax and sustainably sourced materials, reflecting the collection’s deep connection to nature. Each candle vessel is hand-poured into matte-glass containers, embodying the understated elegance of Southern craftsmanship. Unique scent notes such as tobacco, musky florals, and hints of earth evoke the raw, poignant atmosphere of Cain’s music. The labels feature soft textures and botanical illustrations, further emphasizing the intertwining of nature and emotional depth.
