Stussy Playing Cards
Location : Savannah, GA
In Studio 1, we were prompted to create a deck of cards inspired by something personal, and I chose the brand Stüssy due to its unique illustration style. This project centers around the design and creation of a custom deck of playing cards inspired by the legacy of Stüssy. Each card features hand-illustrated characters and design elements, crafted to reflect the bold, rebellious spirit of streetwear culture.
The primary influence for this project was the iconic streetwear brand Stüssy, founded
by Shawn Stüssy in 1980. Originating from the surf culture of Laguna Beach, California, Stüssy quickly became a cultural force by fusing surf, skate, hip-hop, and punk aesthetics into a distinctive streetwear identity. I was particularly drawn to the DIY energy and
raw authenticity of the brand’s early days, especially Shawn’s original signature and
the now famous Stüssy crown. I was also inspired by Jung Hye Soo, whose illustrative
work adds a bold and expressive layer to fashion and design.
I approached the visuals with a fully illustrated style, ensuring that every card
had a hand-done, imperfect charm something that feels lived-in, like a sketch pulled from a street artist’s notebook. I used ink and brush pens for texture, keeping the strokes raw and expressive. The characterson the face cards each represent different street cultures, interpreted through a punk and hip-hop lens. The Stüssy crown features prominently on the back design, a subtle tribute to the brand’s influence and legacy. The palette sticks to stark black and white with occasional bursts of color to mimic the feel of screen-printed vintage tees and street murals.
